How we have helped others

Follow the links below for some examples of how we have helped our service users.

Comments from our service users

Here are some comments from our service users. These testimonials are examples of some of the ways in which we have helped people in Leeds with sensory impairment.

Communication Unit

Quote from a relative:

I feel I should write and thank you sincerely for the unstinting support you have given me through the years with regard to [name]. Whatever the problem, you have always been there for both of us.

[Name]'s life has taken on a new meaning since he became involved with the Communication Unit. He has structure in his life, friends and most important of all a sense of well-being. His aggression has all but disappeared, his demeanour is so much more pleasant, and I know he considers the Communication Unit a safe haven.

The patience and understanding, but most of all your time, taken to help [name] and other service users is phenomenal.

The Communication Unit plays a major part in the lives of disabled and deaf people and has given them a true sense of belonging .

Deafblind Unit (including the Social Communicator Guide Scheme)

Quotes from deafblind people:

I haven't seen Leeds for a long time.

We never stopped laughing.

The whole time out and experience was uplifting.

You do explain and describe everything so well as we go along.

The walk gave me a lovely fresh feeling.

Hard of Hearing Support Service

Quote from a hard-of-hearing person:

Just a few lines to thank you most sincerely for firstly, my interview with you on 28 July, you were extremely helpful and very patient, when one considers just how many people you must deal with each year, you make it appear very personal.

I was really amazed to receive a telephone call . enquiring if it was in order for him to call today to install the equipment, I was of course delighted and he duly arrived this morning.

I am very pleased with the result, I could not believe the difference when I switched on, the result was remarkable and I am positive that my life will improve now that I can hear the TV without it being at full power, may I add that my wife is delighted too!!

Again, my thanks to you for all that you have done for me in a very short space of time, to me, that is an excellent service, I truly am most grateful to you.

Leeds Sign Language Interpreting Service

Quote from a deaf service user:

I can't believe that interpreters are always available anytime as where I used to live there's only one interpreter. I really honestly believe that I will use a Leeds interpreter which will make me feel more comfortable and less worried.

Quote from a corporate service user:

The interpreters (to date) have always been punctual, professional and polite. They are easy to work with and make every effort to communicate and convey information between hearing and deaf staff.

Leeds Deaf Youth Club Recreational Holiday

Quote from a young person who participated in the Recreational Holiday:

I just want to say thank you for planning for the trip, I had such a good time, I want to say thanks for arranging the food, activities and travel. So thank you very much - I bet you are knackered now from sorting it all out. I had a good time and I am going to come again next year!

Volunteer feedback

Quote from a volunteer:

I want to say thank you very much for allowing me the opportunity to go on the camping weekend as a volunteer with the Deaf Group

I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I thought you were absolutely fantastic and I can see why the kids love you.

My sign-language confidence has slightly improved, with many thanks to [the children], we shared so many interesting conversations.
