Help for blind users
Type size
If you are partially sighted, you may wish to increase the type size. You can do this from your browser’s menu – in Internet Explorer, go to the View menu and choose Text Size, then select Larger or Largest from the flyout menu; in Firefox, go to the View menu and choose Text Size, then choose Increase, Decrease or Normal from the flyout menu.
Alternatively, you can click the Large print button near the top of each page. Not only does this increase the type size, but it also changes the pages to a higher-contrast colour scheme which is easier to read. The button is now labelled Standard; you can click it again if you wish to change back to the previous colour scheme and type size.
The layout of the site
All the pages on this site have the same design and layout, making it easy to navigate around them:
- At the top of each page is the Society’s logo, followed by the main site heading – the name of the Society. To the right of these is an accessibility panel, with links to enable you to change the page style to Large print and to view explanatory videos signed in BSL.
- Then on the left of the page you will find an expandable menu or site map (this requires JavaScript to be enabled). To expand a section, click on the plus sign to the left of the section link, and any sub-pages within that section will become visible.
- To the right of the expandable menu is the main text area of the page.
- At the foot of each page is a text menu of all the main sections of the site. This can be used as an alternative to the expandable menu.
If you have any difficulty in finding the page you want, use the Site map page or the Search page.
Using screen-reader programs
Most screen-reader programs should have no trouble with these pages. However, should you find there is a problem, here are a few tips that may help:
- Set your screen resolution to 800 x 600 or higher – 1024 x 768 is best.
- Always maximise all your windows.
- As far as possible, we have kept the links to a single line. However, at a low screen resolution, some links may wrap to two lines. If a link doesn’t seem to make sense, this is probably the reason. if you are using Dolphin’s screen readers, you can use Dolphin Link Navigator to overcome this problem. If you are using Jaws, adjust its settings where necessary.
For those of you who use large-screen software, simply set your screen factors to your normal settings and follow the links through.
